Abstract:

With the external environment becoming more and more indefinite, the relevance of ensuring educational progression, research persistence, and social cohesion at universities is increasing. The paper’s aim is to devise and test a method for a comprehensive assessment of universities’ organisational resilience capacity based on the configuration analysis of key types of capital and the organisational slack. Methodologically, the research relies on the resource-based view, and the concept of dynamic capabilities. The methods are comparative and dynamics analysis, index method, typology. The empirical base comprises panel data of the monitoring of Russian higher education institutions’ performance for 2015–2025; the sample covers 1,021 universities. Having ranked the universities according to the organisational resilience capacity we discovered a pronounced heterogeneity among them: less than 10 % of universities have very high or high resilience, while well over a half of them feature very low resilience. Several repeating configurations of high resilience are also found: comprehensively balanced leaders with the sufficient development level of all types of capital; universities with strong social capital and infrastructure; leaders with financial orientation. In addition, we established that universities’ resilience configurations vary depending on their focus area: classical universities have a multi-faceted one; universities of technology display an infrastructural- network configuration; universities specialising in social sciences and humanities have a network one; medical universities display a financial-resource configuration. The suggested method expands the university resilience diagnostic toolkit and allows grouping them according to the prevailing resource configurations.
