Development of Innovative Entrepreneurship in a Region in the Context of Global Trends

Abstract:

The level of the national innovative development is reasonably considered to be the determining factor behind global competitiveness of the national economy. The paper studies international rankings of countries’ innovative activities and examines key global trends in the development of innovations. The authors identify a number of peculiarities of the approach to innovation management, which allow leading countries to succeed in this field. The position of the Russian Federation in an “innovative” map of the world is determined, and the country’s strengths and weaknesses from the viewpoint of innovative development are analyzed. The authors stress substantial differentiation of regions in terms of innovative development. In addition, the paper presents a detailed characteristic of Sverdlovsk oblast’s innovative entrepreneurship, particularly, it elaborates on the socioeconomic conditions of innovative activity, scientific and technical potential, and quality of innovation policy. The authors consider innovative activities of organizations in the region by types of innovations, volume of innovative products, and structure of spending on innovation. Finally, the main obstacles to unlocking innovative potential of the region as well as possible measures to eliminate them are listed.
