Food Industry in Russia: New Opportunities to Extend Foreign Trade Turnover

Author: Andrey A. Maltsev

Abstract:

The comparative analysis of the food export and import turnover in the USSR and Russia from 1960 to 2014 is conducted. The soviet trade balance by major foodstuffs for 1960–1990 is compiled, what allowed pinpointing the key food subgroups exacerbating the trade deficit. In addition, two stages of the foreign food trade in Russia are determined. The first stage lasted for almost 15 years with the key indicators equal to the last soviet period ones, and the second began in the early 2000s when due to the active agricultural policy the food exports started to significantly outrun both the Russia’s total exports and food imports in dynamics. The author analyzed food trade in 2005–2014 by key subgroups in order to explain the rapid growth of food exports. Finally, the booming food subgroups and problems of food exports in Russia are identified.
