Strategic Directions of Economic Development in Single-Industry Towns of a Region (the Case of Sverdlovsk Oblast)

Abstract: The article describes strategic directions of single-industry towns’ development at the example of Sverdlovsk oblast. The authors analyze changes made to the criteria for identifying single-industry territories in the Russian Federation. Particular attention is paid to the indicators characterizing the positions of single-industry towns in social-economic processes in Russia and Sverdlovsk oblast. The paper generalizes about the main directions of the state support of single-industry towns and emerged modernization models of single-industry territories. It systematizes economic and social problems of single-industry towns’ development in Sverdlovsk oblast, specifies threats to their economic security. Finally, the paper presents key strategic directions of social-economic development for single-industry towns of the region studied.
