Experience of Narrowing Development Gap Among the CIS Countries

Author: Daria A. Chupina

Abstract: The paper demonstrates that the largest regional blocs in the post-soviet space lack focus on economic cohesion. Institutional opportunities of regional economic integration in terms of establishing multilateral aid mechanisms are underexploited and scarcely funded. The bilateral channels of economic aid prevail, preferential fuels supply by Russia being the leading among them. Among the countries of Eurasian Economic Union the Republic of Belorussia seems to be the major beneficiary. Despite massive aid volume, its effect is limited due to non-transparent, no-purpose and unbounded nature. Another drawback is absence of comprehensive approach to narrowing the development gap among the member countries.
